I’ve spent my career at the intersection of technology, innovation, and human potential, leading and observing one wave of disruption after another reshape how we work and live.
The personal computer changed the nature of office work. The internet transformed communication and commerce on a global scale. Mobile technology untethered us from our desks and gave us freedom to roam. Cloud computing rewrote the economics of software. Each innovation has brought uncertainty, excitement, skepticism, and no shortage of disruption.
Yet there was always a rhythm to these transitions.
Organizations experimented. Employees learned. New practices emerged. Eventually, what once felt revolutionary became familiar. People developed confidence. Businesses established a new cadence. We settled into a new normal. The technology matured, and so did our relationship with it.
Artificial intelligence feels fundamentally different.
Not simply because it is more capable than previous technologies, but because the environment itself never seems to settle.
Just as we become proficient with one model, another appears. Teams invest in learning new workflows only to discover that the landscape has shifted again. Capabilities expand almost daily, expectations continue to rise, and what felt innovative yesterday quickly becomes today’s baseline.
This isn’t simply rapid change. It’s perpetual adaptation.
That distinction matters because human beings are remarkably adaptable—but we’re not designed to exist indefinitely in a state of continuous cognitive acceleration and ambiguity.
Much of today’s conversation focuses on AI’s impact on productivity, competitive advantage, and the future of work. These are important discussions. Yet I believe we’re overlooking something equally consequential: what sustained, open-ended adaptation asks of the human nervous system.
I’m not suggesting that AI itself is inherently harmful, nor am I arguing that innovation should slow down. Innovation has always required people to stretch beyond what feels comfortable. Many of us are energized by operating at the leading edge; learning, experimenting, and building what’s next.
The difference lies in whether adaptation feels chosen or imposed.
When we voluntarily pursue a difficult challenge, our minds often interpret that experience as stimulating and meaningful. We lean into uncertainty because it serves a purpose we believe in.
When change becomes relentless, unpredictable, and seemingly without pause, however, the experience can feel very different. The brain remains occupied with constant recalibration. There is little opportunity to pause and integrate what has just been learned before another shift demands our attention.
Over time, many people begin describing a similar experience, regardless of industry or role. They don’t necessarily feel afraid. They simply feel as though they can never quite catch up and catch their breath.
That observation has less to do with capability than with capacity.
The human brain benefits from cycles of learning, mastery, reflection, and recovery. Those rhythms help transform new knowledge into confidence and competence. When the environment rarely pauses long enough for those cycles to occur, many people begin operating in a state of sustained vigilance rather than sustained excellence.
I increasingly wonder whether one of the defining leadership challenges of the AI era will be expanding our organizations’ adaptive capacity (at an individual level) without overwhelming the people responsible for driving that adaptation.
For years, we’ve celebrated resilience. Perhaps resilience is no longer enough.
Adaptive capacity is something different. It isn’t about asking people to endure more change. It’s about designing cultures that enable people to remain thoughtful, creative, healthy, and fully engaged while navigating continuous change.
That requires leaders to think beyond implementation plans and technology roadmaps.
It means creating islands of clarity in environments that often feel ambiguous. It means communicating with consistency even when circumstances evolve. It means protecting time for reflection, encouraging deeper thinking over constant reaction, and recognizing that recovery is not a luxury—it is part of sustained high performance.
This is also where Leadership Resonance becomes increasingly important.
Whether leaders realize it or not, they influence far more than strategy and execution. They shape the emotional climate in which their teams operate. Calm creates calm. Clarity creates confidence. Presence creates psychological safety. Conversely, chronic urgency, fragmented communication, and perpetual reactivity ripple through organizations in ways that are both visible and invisible.
People don’t simply respond to a leader’s decisions. They respond to the leader’s state. In an era of continuous technological acceleration, that may become one of the greatest competitive advantages and assets any organization possesses.
The companies that flourish won’t necessarily be those adopting every new AI capability the fastest. They will be the ones that combine technological ambition with human wisdom. They will understand that long-term innovation depends not only on intelligent systems but also on people whose judgment, creativity, discernment, and capacity for meaningful collaboration remain intact.
For decades, technological revolutions eventually gave us a new normal.
AI may never offer that luxury. If perpetual adaptation truly becomes the defining characteristic of modern work, then perhaps the next frontier of leadership isn’t mastering the technology itself. Perhaps it’s learning how to steward the humans navigating it.
Because while AI may continue evolving at extraordinary speed, our greatest responsibility as leaders is ensuring that the people building the future don’t lose themselves in the process.
