How do you really feel about yourself? As women, leaders, and mothers, it is our responsibility to help shape a healthy sense of self and possibility for the next generation—and that starts with building a positive relationship with ourselves. Join Athena founder & CEO Coco Brown and integrated health and wellness coach Heidi Bodenheimer as they discuss our leadership role in ensuring women and girls have positive self-images. They will explore the state of women and body image today, why nothing we try (diets, exercising, mental health programs) seems to work, and what we can do about it now for ourselves, our girls, and our community.

Hello! I am so excited to have the opportunity to share a little of my life’s work with you!! Why, you may ask? Well, the second I have the opportunity to possibly help someone become a better version of themselves by shedding light on truths that can actually make a HUGE difference, my heart lights up! This has been my life’s work and I am extremely passionate about sharing it. As a child, I was a gymnast for many, many years. I may have looked fit and strong on the outside, but that was not at all what was going on inside. I would always compare myself to the other gymnasts. Let’s face it, there is not a lot of give in those leotards! But, I never thought I was thin enough, strong enough, worthy enough even though I received various awards. In my head, if I just didn’t eat very much today, I would be that much lighter to do a stellar bar routine to then after the meet was over, binge on ice cream, icing (yes, the tubs!!) and other crap until the next practice or meet. I got into the fitness industry 23 years ago because working out was what I knew best. I fell in love! I have taught so many formats from Zumba, step, pilates, yoga to strength and HIIT classes. I could not get enough. I absolutely loved it! I even became a Master trainer in several formats which means that I train instructors in a particular format so that they can get certified to teach to others. For me, to have even more influence in helping people get healthy was the absolute bomb! I opened and managed a boutique fitness studio for 8 years. My mission was to have EVERYONE feel welcome no matter if they were a gym rat or stepping into a gym for the very first time. I had worked at too many gyms that I saw what happened when someone came in who didn’t fit their stereotypical “what a gym person” should look like mentality. This simply made absolutely NO sense to me. People of every size, shape and age would come to my classes and they would tell me that they really liked how I made them feel and that I met them right where they were on their health and wellness journey. You can imagine after being in an industry that is all about how a body “should” look for so long, I struggled as well. I went through my own journey of not being “enough,” whatever it was at that time, not thin enough, my muscles not developed enough, not confident enough, etc. I felt like I was back in my gymnastic days all over again. I finally had enough and started on my own personal development journey. I read as many mindset books I could get my hands on. I became a self development podcast junkie. If there was a training on mindset online, I did it. As soon as I started this incredible journey, I literally woke up!! I realized I had everything I needed right inside me. I then wanted to share with as many people as I could. In the process, I realized that the fitness industry was doing a complete disservice in helping people get healthy. Afterall, obesity is at an all time high! I started out getting certifications in behavior change and integrative nutrition. I have seen practically every diet fad come and go along with seeing the results that people did and did not get. There is not a diet out there that is going to work for everyone or anyone for that matter if someone does not change what they are thinking. I realized I had my work cut out for me, but when you are so incredibly passionate as I am about something, you find a way to make a difference! And, the best part, it all comes from within! I am a Certified Integrative Health & Wellness graduate from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. I have 7 years transformational coaching experience. I am a Certified ACE Personal Trainer and AFAA Group Exercise Instructor, Behavioral Change Specialist and mindset guru. I also am certified in Yoga, Pilates, Barre and numerous other formats.
